What is the CQC?

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is the independent regulator of health and social care in England. It monitors, inspects and rates care services to make sure they meet fundamental standards of quality and safety.

Every care provider in England that delivers personal care - including home care agencies like MoralCare - must be registered with the CQC. It is a legal requirement. Providers that are not registered are operating illegally.

The CQC carries out inspections of registered services and rates them on a four-point scale:

Inadequate

Significant concerns

Requires Improvement

Not meeting standards

US

Good

Meeting expectations

Outstanding

Exceptionally high

During an inspection, the CQC assesses five key questions about every service: Is it safe? Is it effective? Is it caring? Is it responsive? Is it well-led?

Inspectors visit the service, speak to clients and their families, review care plans and risk assessments, check staff records and training, and observe how care is delivered. Their findings are published in a report that is freely available to the public.

Choosing a CQC-registered provider means you can be confident that the service is legally compliant, regularly inspected and held to account. You can check any provider's rating on the CQC website.

How to contact the CQC

If you have any concerns about a care service - or if you simply want to check a provider's registration and rating - you can contact the CQC directly. They welcome feedback from people who use services, their families and the public.
