Hydration Support Home Services

How do we support people with hydration at home?

Staying hydrated is underestimated. As we get older, being adequately hydrated can prevent hospital admissions, but is much more difficult to keep up as thirst sensation changes or even memory troubles cause challenges. We can make sure that we monitor fluid intake and ensure service users are well-hydrated.

Staying hydrated helps prevent:

  • Falls and dizziness
  • Weakness
  • Tiredness
  • Confusion
  • Disorientation
  • Urine infections
  • Low blood pressure
  • Dry skin conditions.

Urine infections

Older people are more susceptible to urine infections due to a weaker flow of urine and struggle to empty the entire bladder. This can lead to bacteria building up in the urine and bladder. Urine infections in the elderly can cause:

  • Falls
  • Behavioral changes and mood swings
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Discomfort and pain
  • Fever
  • An untreated UTI can lead to kidney failure or sepsis.

Our care team will make sure service users are offered a drink every single visit and have access to fluids. We will monitor any potential signs of infection and refer fast.
